PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In August 2022, Harris County Flood Control District completed construction on a project to improve stormwater conveyance and repair erosion along a Cypress Creek tributary formally identified as K163-00-00. The project replaced a portion of the existing earthen channel with 4,750 linear feet of boxed culverts, including inlets, junction boxes and tie-ins with subdivision outfalls. The project also included the installation of approximately 1,200 linear feet of erosion control for the channel downstream near the confluence with Cypress Creek. Other construction activities included fencing to protect wetlands and removal of encroachments from public rights-of-way.

This project addressed repetitive flooding in the area, including in Timberlake Estates and Saracen Park subdivisions. The project was in conjunction with Harris County Engineering Department’s drainage improvement projects to address repetitive flooding in the area, particularly within the neighborhood subdivisions.

This project received funding from 2018 Bond Program, Bond ID F-23, which provided $3 million.

Location

This channel runs north from Cypress North Houston Road, just east of Timberlake Drive, flowing into Cypress Creek just west of its confluence with Little Cypress Creek. The channel is bordered by the Ravensway, Saracen Park, and Timberlake Estates neighborhoods on the west, and by the Cypress Creek Estates neighborhood on the east.

Bond Project Listing

Bond ID F-23, which involves the construction of K163-00-00 channel improvements, is a “Local Only” bond project. This means there is no other funding partner at this time and total project costs would be paid with bond funding. Total allocation for this project is currently $3 million on the Bond Project List.

Project Lifecycle

Every flood damage reduction project is unique. Yet each project begins and ends, with common and predictable milestones along the way. Whether a project moves forward – and how quickly – depends on many factors, including the availability of funding at each milestone, shifting community priorities for flood damage reduction, and other changing circumstances (such as the price of trees or concrete) from year to year.
