PROJECT DESCRIPTION 

These projects work together to reduce flood risks and damages in the Berry Bayou watershed:

Phase 4 of Channel Improvements, Berry Bayou Tributary C106-03-00 from Shawnee Street to IH-45

  • On January 7, 2020, Harris County Commissioners Court awarded a $6.48 million contract for construction of this phase.
  • Continues open channel with concrete lining.
  • Will remove the 1 percent (100-year) floodplain from hundreds of homes and businesses.

Phase 3 of channel improvements, Berry bayou tributary C106-03-00 from south Houston city limits to Shawnee Street

  • Continues open channel with concrete lining, with some covered box sections in areas of limited right-of-way.
  • Will remove the 1 percent (100-year) floodplain from hundreds of homes and businesses.
  • Construction completed in 2020.
  • Portion of the original Phase 3, from Shawnee Street to Interstate Highway 45, was removed from this phase, and rebid for construction in 2019 as Phase 4.

Phase 2 of Channel Improvements, Berry Bayou Tributary C106-03-00 from Dakota to South Houston City Limits

  • Open channel with concrete lining. 
  • Will remove the 1 percent (100-year) floodplain from hundreds of homes and businesses. 
  • Construction completed in 2018.

South Richey Stormwater Detention Basin C506-03-00

  • Needed to provide stormwater storage for mitigation of Phase 2 and Phase 3 projects on Berry Bayou tributary C106-03-00. 
  • Located on a site roughly bordered by South Richey Street, Berry Bayou, and Kolb Road. 
  • Construction completed in 2016. 
  • Basin holds approximately 280.5 acre-feet, or more than 91 million gallons, of excess stormwater.

Crenshaw Stormwater Detention Basin, C506-02-00

The Crenshaw Stormwater Detention Basin, C506-02-00, was needed to provide stormwater storage for mitigation of Phase 3 project on Berry Bayou tributary C106-08-00. Located on a site bordered by Crenshaw Road, South Shaver Street and Galveston Road (Highway 3). The basin currently holds approximately 152 acre-feet, or more than 49 million gallons, of excess stormwater.
